Research tells us that learning to read and learning to spell relies on the same fundamental skills, yet spelling is often taught as a separate subject, with no relation to reading. Little Learners Love Literacy® integrates spelling as part of every class, using the Let’s Spell as a model to gently scaffold learning. We understand that decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) are two sides of the same coin, but that spelling is a far more consuming and difficult task. Children require a firm understanding of the alphabetic code if they are to succeed in spelling and writing.

This 90 minute workshop will touch on the importance of spelling, while focusing on the tools Little Learners Love Literacy® integrates into the lessons. There will be opportunity for hands-on time with Sound Swap, Sound Check and Let’s Spell materials, with instruction on how to use them with small groups, and opportunity to ask any questions you have about teaching spelling.

About Little Learners Love Literacy

While working with children who needed additional support, Maureen Pollard realised there was a need for explicit and sequential phonemic and phonics teaching in Australian classrooms. When she helped teachers change their approach and pedagogy, the overall literacy results improved drastically and Learning Logic and Little Learners Love Literacy® was born.

Evidence-based literacy research stresses the importance of explicit and sequential literacy teaching from the beginning. Our goal is to have this happening in every Foundation classroom from Day 1, giving children the best possible chance of being fluent readers, writers and spellers.

It also makes it clear that the most effective way of teaching reading is to include 5 key components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency practice, vocabulary and comprehension. Little Learners Love Literacy® has been developed to do this in a simple, sequential, explicit, effective and engaging way.
